The concept of a green economy was formally introduced at Rio+20, nearly two decades after the concept of sustainable development was officially adopted at the United Nations (UN) Environment and Development Conference in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. The aim was to deal with problems related to unsustainable economic development and environmental degradation. Following the 2008 financial crisis, the green economy entered the mainstream in economic debates and is now perceived by international organizations and governments as a paradigm shift in contemporary development thinking for sustainable economic development. In addition to mitigating the effects of the global crisis and improving the environment, the green economy is also seen as a means of eliminating global poverty and social inequalities. Within the framework of this perception, the study aims to emphasize the importance of the green economy within the concept of sustainability. Within this scope, the relationship between the green economy and other environmental concepts, the development process of the green economy, the stages and principles of the transition to the green economy, and the benefits of the green economy transformation will be discussed.
