Abstract

Renewable energy is a kind of energy that is derived from natural processes that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed. Wind, solar, geothermal, hydropower, bioenergy and ocean power are sources of renewable energy. The role of renewable energy sources continue to increase in the electricity, heating and cooling and transport sectors. There are many policies available to support the deployment of renewable energy. Support policies aim to promote deployment in order to achieve a number of objectives. Some of these aims are to improve technology cost-competitiveness; create jobs; promote a sustainable level of domestic production and increase market share; and move towards a more sustainable, secure energy system. The aim of this study is to analyze the public policies used to support the development of renewable energy in Turkey. A universal support policy does not exist in renewable energy. The support mechanisms preferred in the world are feed-in tariff, premium guarantee, renewable portfolio standards, tendering/bidding, tax reductions or exemptions, tax credits. Renewable energy has been one of the important topics on Turkey?s energy agenda. In Turkey, renewable electricity production is mainly promoted through a guaranteed feed-in tariff.
