Abstract

Turkish folk dances are considered one of the strongest reflections of Turkish society's cultural identity on stage and are evaluated within the "performing arts" domain under UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) framework. Thanks to its rich cultural diversity, Turkey has the potential to utilize traditional elements like folk dances in tourism. This study aims to analyze how Turkish folk dances are utilized in the tourism sector and to determine how this cultural asset can be marketed more effectively within the context of tourism enterprises. This conceptual study, prepared through a literature review of secondary sources using the compilation method, identifies that Turkish folk dances are primarily promoted in the tourism sector through "Turkish Night" events organized in accommodation facilities. However, it has been emphasized that these events often possess a superficial, repetitive structure that fails to reflect cultural authenticity. It is concluded that Turkish folk dances should be regarded not only as a means of entertainment in tourism but also as a tool for cultural narrative and authenticity. The findings of the study reveal that folk dances play a significant role in welcoming tourists and entertaining them by transferring cultural heritage. In this context, presenting Turkish folk dances in all-inclusive tourism systems, such as hotel animation programs, while preserving their authenticity, is of great importance for cultural sustainability. In conclusion, it is necessary to organize certification programs and training workshops to enhance the competence of animators regarding folk dances, and to establish a standard that preserves the authenticity of regional costumes, music, and dances. This standard should be determined through joint efforts of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Turkish Folk Dance Federation, and relevant non-governmental organizations. Furthermore, more academic studies examining the impacts and applications of folk dances in the tourism sector are needed, focusing particularly on their effects on destination promotion and tourist satisfaction. Accurate representation of Turkish folk dances contributes to the development of cultural tourism while ensuring the intergenerational transmission of cultural heritage and allowing tourists not only to enjoy themselves but also to experience and understand the culture of folk dances.
