Abstract

In the Byzantine period, a stone slab believed to belong to the Balatlar Church which has an important religious position in Sinop Province is the subject of this article. "Jesus and angels" are depicted as low reliefs on the stone slab in the rectangular form, which is still exhibited at the Sinop Museum Garden. This depict is rarely seen in the Byzantine art when it is considered in the context of the subjects depicted in stone works. For this reason, the examination of the depiction on the stone work and the identification of the place in the stone artifacts of Byzantine art form the main purpose of this article. It is thought that the work under the light of the available data is a sheet belonging to a lintel or iconostasis section on the church entrance gate. It was dated to the Middle Byzantine period by the monograms on the plate and the way from the ornament.
