Abstract

This study aims to reveal the reflections on the subject of migration in the human systems unit in the geography curriculum on the media. In this study, document analysis was used as a qualitative data analysis method. The population of this research consists of all written and visual media. These are television channels, national newspapers, internet news sites, and current and science magazines. Among the mass media, television channels, national newspapers, current and science magazines and internet news sites, which are the most preferred in print and visual media, were included in the sample. National newspapers were monitored for one month, current and science magazines for four months, television channels for three months, and internet news websites for three months. The news corresponding to migration in the aforementioned mass media was processed into evaluation forms and interpreted through descriptive analysis.

When evaluated based on quantity among all media tools, it was determined that the news corresponding to the subject of migration was mostly found on internet news sites. It was observed that the news and texts identified within the scope of the research were mostly about "irregular migration." When the news and texts corresponding to the subject of migration published in the media tools were evaluated according to their subjects, it was concluded that the subjects of "migration attempt resulting in disaster" in national newspapers, "migrant smuggling" in television channels, "irregular migration" in internet news sites, and "exchange migration" in magazines were covered more. In geography lessons, using news with high instructive quality and corresponding to the subject of migration as course material will help to concretize the subject and gain an actual quality.
