Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze Ali Mümtaz Arolat’s poem Dalgalarla Beraber published on
Dergâh magazine in 1921 and to reveal the imaginative meaning of the sea. The classical poetry analysis technique
was applied through the study. Consisting of five separate parts, each part of this river poem has been evaluated
independently, in the conclusion part a general judgment has been reached.
The theme of the poem dedicated to Hasan Râsim Us, one of the writers of Dergâh magazine, is the sea.
His allegation is that the sea assumes a reflective function like a mirror to humans and vice versa. With which
emotional state and thought one approaches to the sea, it responds to humanbeings likewise. Moreover, the sea has
the power to exaggerate these feelings and thoughts with its majesty. The person who chooses to take this as an
advantage uses the sea as a means of revenge in the moment of anger. Thus he experiences catharsis and is purified
by getting rid of the negativity that alienates his soul from himself.
Arolat associates the sea with the inner world of a person, with its boundless view and unreachable depth.
In the poem, the sea serves as a mirror, a lens and a means of revenge that enables one to make sense of his feelings
and thoughts and thus to take control of his life.
