Abstract

Despite the fact that philosophers like Ibn Sina had mentioned their opinions on the education of infant children centuries ago, thoughts on the need of the professional education of children at the pre ? school age have been expressed loudly in recent centuries. Pre ? school education is conducted on compulsory basis in some of the developed countries and on voluntary basis in the others. Education of infant children has become an important issue in our country after primary education was made compulsory during the reign of Mahmud II. This situation was carried over to the republican period and the rulers of the young republic agreed on that total progress could be maintained by education. Accordingly the intellectuals and politicians of the era showed special interest in education. Hilmi Ziya Ülken, who is one of the intellectuals of the period, had made researches and expressed his opinions on subjects from education to history and from politics to philosophy. In this study, Hilmi Ziya Ülken?s thoughts on the importance of game and its relation to value in the education of pre ?school children is being analyzed. This study is based on the main works of the philosopher. In this study, which is a theoretical research, content analysis and interpreting data technics have been used.
