Abstract

Sports, that has become an integral part of life, comes forward with its characteristics which improve person in terms of physical performance and health, and life quality. History of sport almost goes back to history of humankind. ?n old societies people did sport for both nutrition and hunting as well as sheltering and protection. Since then it evaluates and transforms in times and reaches these days. Music also has the same functions like relaxing and healing effects on human budy as sport, as well. So music also passes through the same way and interwined to sport today. Even in today?s World we can?t imagine sport without music. Moreover it is possible to see music in every place where sport is done. Initially, music and sports which seem to be different fields from each other actually united on a common ground and started to be used on athlete motivation. Sports movements, generally accompanied by music, have now taken a different dimension with conscious music choices. Today, while many amateur and professional athletes do their warm-up and training, they are motivated by music and leave themselves to the rhythm of music. The type, volume and tempo of the music used have an important role in athletes? achievements. It has been very common for athletes to perform different stages of their training with dynamic and calm music. In this study, it is aimed to see the effect of music, which has become a part of daily life, on athletes. The universe of the research is composed of Sakarya High School of Sports students. As the sample group, 110 athletes with different branches, classes and licenses were determined in Sakarya High School of Sports. In the study, the observation technique, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the process including the performance stage. Participants' reactions to Turkish and foreign music during the training were recorded on the observation form under the supervision of the teachers who were observers. In the ongoing process of the research as a descriptive scanning model, a questionnaire which was developed by the researcher and finalized in line with expert opinions was applied to the participants. Observation and questionnaire data obtained in the study were interpreted and concluded within the framework of sub-problems. This research is important in terms of seeing the effects of mood and motivation experienced by individuals who do sports during their training with music.
